Flake Presses AG Nom on Operation Streamline
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) used his time during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing of Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch to shift the discussion to Operation Streamline.
Operation Streamline is a federal program seeking to reduce recidivism in the Yuma Sector by expeditiously prosecuting those entering or reentering the United States illegally under a “zero tolerance” approach. Flake has long sought answers from the administration in response to reports that the Justice Department has stopped prosecutions of first-time illegal border crossers under Operation Streamline – one of the few programs associated with improvements in border security – unless they have a criminal history or are otherwise a threat to public safety. Watch his exchange with Lynch below:
“[Operation Streamline] isn't all we need to do but it is a significant part of what we need to do, and Arizonans have paid the price – a disproportionate price – for a long time for the federal government's failure to have a secure border.
“So when we have programs like this that work and we see success in one sector – and everybody can point to that – it’s very disturbing when D.O.J. pulls back on that. And we fear that Yuma sector – as the economy kicks up again and crossings are more frequent – that we're going to have the same problems that we had a few years ago. We just can't go on with that.”

For months, the Phoenix VA has had its own share of problems.
Falsifying records and long waits to see a doctor.
The issues are still big enough for Arizona Senator, Jeff Flake to skip a retreat to meet with the Phoenix VA's interim director.
Veteran Tim Daniels says the meeting is a good thing because he still spends hour on end, just to see a doctor.
Senator Flake says the wait times have improved, but complaints still flood in.
"Complaints before had to do with wait time than access. Now it has to do with coordination of care," he says.
The Senator also says he would like to see a permanent director named as soon as possible.
He believes that will help the facility get back on track.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today delivered a speech on the role of Congress in U.S. foreign policy to the Council on Foreign Relations. In the speech, Flake discussed his view of Congress’s role in foreign policy as revolving around advancing three major goals:
"First and foremost, it is our job to protect U.S. national interests by reinforcing U.S. leadership abroad. Second, our national interest is best served when the U.S. promotes and supports the principle of liberty and the democratic process abroad. Finally, just as with domestic policy, Congress should protect U.S. taxpayers from wasteful and egregious spending in our foreign policy."
